Pore Water Vacuum Collection Systems

UMS offers a variety of vacuum systems to meet the needs of your research. Extract representative soil water samples with a constant vacuum, a timed vacuum or a tension-controlled vacuum: with the new VS-systems we can offer you an all-purpose and modern vacuum regulation.

Which Vacuum Should Be Applied?

To extract soil water in the unsaturated zone the soil water tension (retention force) has to be surpassed by the sampler's potential - a vacuum needs do to be applied.

The vacuum should be as close as possible to the in-situ soil water tension, as i.e. carbon will fall out in high vacuum.

Variations of the pressure difference between the sampler's inside and outside will lead to different filtration results - thus, memory effects occur.  This is prevented by a tension controlled vacuum unit.

tensiolink.jpg

TensioLINK USB converter

The tensioLINK USB converter is used for directly connecting sensors and devices with serial tensioLINK to a PC.  One can configure features and read out measured data.

UMS devices with 8pin M12 connectors (e.g. TS1 or T8 tensiometers) could be directly connected to the converter without the need for a further power supply.  The sensor is powered through the USB interface.

Use with the PC-Software tensioVIEW.  Manual Software and Driver come along with supplied CD.

Sensor Supply 9 VDC / 100 mA tolerance +1 V
Short circuit 2 Min.
Galvanic isolation 1 kV
Serial sensor interface RS485-2 wire, ESD protection 15 kV
USB interface compliant to USB 1.1 und 2.0

VacuPorter Vacuum Case

The simplest method Evacuate your sampling bottle down to approximately 50 kPa.  If the soil water tension is lower than 50 kPa, soil water solution will be extracted until vacuum and soil water tension are equalized.  When the samples are collected, the bottle is evacuated again.
