Watch our five minute video on how to install soil moisture sensors

10 August 2010 by Lauren Bissey (4 Comments)

Soil Moisture Installation video

Poor installation techniques are the number one reason for bad soil moisture sensor data sets.  This installation video was made in a local research farm to show you a few methods that we use to properly install soil moisture sensors.  Five 5TE (soil moisture, temperature, and EC) sensors were installed at each of 40 locations at depths of one, two, three, four, and five feet using a sidewall installation technique and a downhole installation technique.  The video also shows how we make our homemade istallation tool.

  • Since you are using a soil auger I dont think any digging is needed.
It is a good practice to pour water around tha sensor to create mud that will eliminate any air bubles or voulims.

  • Very nice, helpful to see how it's done. I recommend bringing a drop cloth along for dug-up soil, that way you leave a nice clean installation site
