Resistances of 200 Ohm 5TE/5TM Campbell dataloggers Link to this post

    3 March 2011 at 2:01am

    Dear Moderators,

I would like to know 2 things:

    - Together with several 5TE I have ordered I received an equal number of 200 Ohm resistances. Is it very important to use them if I have to plug sensors to a Campbell datalogger (in this case a CR5000)? Could I know something more about the effects of the application/non-application of these resistances?

    - May I use them with the 5TM as well?

Thanks in advance for the precious help,

    Francesco

Those resistors are a carryover from the times where some of our older digital sensors (EC-TM and the ECHO-TE) did not have stable readings when used with some Campbell Scientific data loggers. We found that with the resistors in place, the readings were stabilized. We don't see this problem with the 5TE sensors or the 5TM sensors; however having them in place does not affect the readings. My advice to you is to just set them aside for a future electronics project. Are you using the sensors in SDI-12 mode? Do you have any additional questions about connecting those sensors to your CR5000?

    Thanks Lauren!
Yes I'm using them in SDI-12 mode since I already have other so many sensors on the analogical bridges.
If I will have other questions I will not hesitate to ask.
    Have a nice day,

    Francesco

    Dear Lauren,

I actually have another question related to the 5TM employed in SDI 12 mode. Do you know by chance the maximum number of these sensors that is possible to plug at the same Voltage supply port (5V) on a Campbell datalogger (in this case a CR5000)? I had some issues with more than 5 but I am pretty sure I am doing something wrong.
A hand would be really appreciated.
    Many thanks,

    Francesco

    Francesco,
I would recommend using the 12V port on the CR5000 instead of the 5V port. I haven't used the CR5000 myself, but when we are programming the 5TE and 5TM sensors in SDI-12 logger with our CR1000, we always use the sw12V power supply, which can be applied to the sensors continuously. To use the sensors in SDI-12 mode, continuous power is required for the whole measurement to take place. Are you using our manual or the itegrator's guide to assist you with the SDI-12? Your best resources for using the 5TM sensor in SDI-12 are here http://www.decagon.com/education/5te-5tm-integrator-s-guides-for-serial-and-sdi-12-communication/
but feel free to continue to use the forum to ask us questions about the set-up. You can also post your data or SDI-12 program if you would like us to look over it.
